Love Among the Greats

October 28, 2009

loveThe time has finally come to accept it.  The Yankees made the play offs and the Red Sox didn’t.  So no more sports books for awhile.  I must rid my brain of all thoughts related to sports for as long as it takes.

This is an interesting collection of short stories by Edith Pearlman, written in 2002.  Her stories are character driven, the characters are fascinating.  The book won the Spokane prize for fiction and is well worth a read.

Juicing the Game

October 4, 2009

juicingThe play-offs are about the start and while I’m excited about watching, I’m also sad to see the season drawing to a close.  Football doesn’t interest me, so it will be a long, cold winter.  Baseball books will get me through, and this is one of many that addresses the problems with the sport.  It’s always all about steroids to the point that we’re all getting sick of it.  But…this book looks at the issue from all sides; political, cultural and financial.  It is well worth a read.

The Last Days of Dead Celebrities

October 4, 2009

LastDaysMitchell Fink is a NYT bestselling author.  This is not a book that would have made that list, but it is a good read for those who are interested in the lives, and deaths, of celebrities.  Of particular interest is the sad murder of John Lennon and the the tragic suicide of Margaux Hemingway.  Also read about John Denver, John Ritter, Warren Zevon and many more.
